The First Six Months

This plan is organized around the six-month path suggested on page 74 of the Refuge Recovery book. You can follow it exactly or use it as a starting point to build your own program of recovery.

  • Dharma Friends: Combine with the Dharma Buddies Meeting Guide as a checklist of discussion each week with your Dharma friend.
  • Individuals: Read the website or book and listen to Dharma talks.
  • Meetings: Use the topic and reading pairings for weekly discussions.
  • Pick Two/Three: There are more resources listed than could be accessed in a week. Choose the ones that apply to your path. You can always return later.
  • Pace of the Inventory:
    • Go faster: Focus more on the questions; answering more of them than listed for the week
    • Go more slowly: Focus more on teachings and practice; answering fewer questions each week

This pace will accomplish the program laid out on Page 74 of the Refuge Recovery Book in about six months.

You will begin to build a daily practice and gain experience with different meditations.

  1. Read and study the Refuge Recovery text
  2. Finish the First and Second Truth Inventories

In the next six months, follow the plan as outlined on Page 74 of the Refuge Recovery text, adding:

  1. Complete the 3rd Truth Inventory
  2. Continue to meet with your Dharma Friend
  3. If appropriate, start the practice of making amends
  4. If appropriate, start the practice of being a Dharma friend to newcomers
